February 20th, 2020
The Great American Spit Out occurs on the third Thursday of the month of February each year. Like it's cousin event The Great American Smokeout, this event serves to urge the public to give up tobacco — smokeless tobacco products. Chewing tobacco can contribute to cancers of the mouth and throat, and can be just as addictive as inhaled tobacco items. Smokeless tobacco, such as dip and chew, is dangerous and often overlooked. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), smokeless tobacco products contain 2,000 chemical compounds, including 30 cancer-causing chemicals, such as arsenic, nickel, lead, and formaldehyde.
