St. Nicholas was one of the most venerated saints of both Eastern and Western Christian churches. Little is known about his life, except for that he was Bishop of Myra, in what is now Turkey in the fourth century. From early times he was known for his charity. The presentation of Christmas gifts is said to derive from St. Nicholas' acts of charity.
