National Coast Guard Day is set aside to celebrate and honor the courageous work of the Coast Guard. The U.S. Coast Guard is one of the five armed forces of the United States and the only military organization within the Department of Homeland Security. Since 1790 the Coast Guard has safeguarded the United States' maritime interests and environment around the world.
When Hurricane Katrina struck the Atlantic coast of America, the US Coast Guard saved over 33,500 lives, an estimated 24,000 of these were rescued from peril in severely dangerous conditions.
The Coast Guard's role and responsibilities can often be under-appreciated.
