This special day is a fun, tongue-in-cheek event that celebrates the beauty of the ugly hagfish, which is also called the slime eel. The goal is to raise awareness and understanding of the significance of all sea creatures, even those that may be ugly, slimy or unappealing. This event occurs annually on the third Wednesday in October.
