Just five days after the end of the Civil War, before the North and South had reconciled, President Abraham Lincoln and First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln attended "Our American Cousin" at Ford's Theatre. Shots rang out from inside the playhouse, screams ensued and the 16th president of the United States was mortally wounded. Southern sympathizer John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Lincoln in cold blood.
